After a few group art shows since the end of May, I have been in a low-key mood during the heatwave. 

Après quelques expositions depuis la fin mai, je suis passée en mode "ralenti" pendant la vague de chaleur.

I was so busy with the shows that I stopped working on my project "ABC & Phonétique". I have not worked with After Effects (the animation program) for a few months now and... I had forgotten a bit how to use it.
My friend Sarah recommended the book "After Effects Apprentice" by Trish and Chris Meyer. Reviewing After Effects will be the first thing I will do when the temperature will come down a bit.

J'ai été tellement occupée par les expositions que j'ai arrêté de travailler sur mon projet "ABC & Phonétique". Je n'ai pas travaillé avec After Effects (le programme d'animation) depuis quelques mois maintenant et... j'ai un peu oublié comment l'utiliser.
Mon amie Sarah m'a recommandé le livre "After Effects Apprentice" par Trish et Chris Meyer. Réviser After Effects sera la première chose que je vais faire dès que la température sera un peu redescendue.

Postcard from Loches

Town of Loches France.

Loches is a beautiful medieval town in Loire Valley. What makes Loches even more beautiful is that our dear friends Tang and Hervé are moving there. This Easter vacation we went to visit their new house, and we would like to follow our friends' foot step and find a house over there. 

Loches est une belle ville médiévale dans la vallée de la Loire. Ce qui rend Loches encore plus belle c'est que nos amis Tang et Hervé s'y installent. Durant les vacances de Pâques nous sommes allés visiter leur nouvelle maison, et nous aimerions un jour suivre leur exemple et trouver une maison là bas.

Sadly, our friends' two cats passed away recently and they will not know Loches. Kimchi, brown tiger cat, was probably bitten by a snake, she was 10 years old. She was a cuddly cat and purred on friends' laps. 
Mitsu was the queen of the house. she lived her full cat life, she was 18 years old.

Tristement, les deux chats de nos amis ont disparu récemment et ne connaîtront pas Loches.
Kimchi, brun-tigré, a peut être été mordue par un serpent, elle avait 10 ans. Elle était affectueuse et ronronnait sur les genoux des amis.
Mitsu était la reine de la maison, elle a vécu sa pleine vie de chat jusqu'à 18 ans.

Thank you Tang and Hervé for the vacations in Loches, we will all miss Kimchi and Mitsu.

Mon Alphabet

For my birthday, my friends Jean and Brigitte offered me the antique book "Mon Alphabet en Images" printed by "Librairies-Imprimeries Réunies". This picture book is old yet very well conserved. There is no date on it, but looking at illustrations we think it was printed around 1920.

Pour mon anniversaire, mes amis Jean et Brigitte m'ont offert le livre "Mon Alphabet en Images" imprimé par "Librairies-Imprimeries Réunies".
Ce livre illustré est ancien mais très bien conservé. Il n'y a pas date dessus, mais à regarder les illustrations nous pensons qu'il date des années 1920.


The book begins with the alphabet, then it has 11 pages of basic rules of French phonetics like "pi", "pa", "po" then "br", "cr", "dr", etc. After the phonetic rules, the book presents vocabulary from A to Z with little stories.
This is well done, learning the alphabet and pronunciation is the key to reading.
Foreigners who study French language often miss learning this basic step first.

Le livre commence par l'alphabet, puis il y a 11 pages de règles phonétiques de base comme "pi", "pa", "po" puis "br", "cr", "dr", etc. Après les règles phonétiques le livre présente du vocabulaire de A à Z avec de petites histoires.
Ce livre est bien conçu, apprendre l'alphabet et la prononciation est la clé de la lecture.
Les étrangers qui apprennent la langue française manquent souvent cette première étape de base.

After "ABC Paris" which illustrates monuments, "Mon Alphabet en Images" gave me an idea to work on a new "ABC": Illustrated everyday vocabulary to learn French phonetic.

Après "ABC Paris" qui illustre des monuments, "Mon Alphabet en Images" m'a donné l'idée de travailler sur un nouvel "ABC" : Du vocabulaire de tous les jours, illustré, pour apprendre la phonétique en Français.

So I am brainstorming my next project.
Donc je réfléchis à mon prochain projet.

French Alphabet

This is it! At last, I uploaded the first animation of the series "ABC Paris" on the Illustrator in Paris YouTube!  It took me a long time to finish these first animations. 

Ça y est ! Enfin j'ai envoyé la première animation de la série "ABC Paris" sur ma chaine YouTube Illustrator in Paris ! Cela m'a pris longtemps pour achever ces premières animations. 

French alphabet is a very important first step in learning French.
French language uses the same alphabet as English, however it does not pronounce the same. Well, "ABC…" is a good place to start.

L'alphabet est une étape très importante dans l'apprentissage du Français. La langue française utilise le même alphabet que l'Anglais, mais il ne se prononce pas de même façon. Donc, "ABC..." est le bon endroit pour commencer.

I will be uploading the readings of the book "ABC Paris" starting with page "A like L'Arc de Triomphe". I hope to work faster, so the readers can listen (and read) the entire book from A to Z soon!

Je vais envoyer les lectures du livre "ABC Paris" en commençant par la page "A comme Arc de Triomphe". J'espère travailler plus rapidement pour que le lecteur puisse bientôt écouter (et lire !) le livre de A à Z.

Learning the gender of French nouns is tricky, so I created the book "ABC Paris" emphasizing masculine nouns in blues and feminine nouns in red.

Apprendre le genre des noms en français est difficile, j'ai donc créé le livre "ABC paris", écrivant les noms masculins en bleu et les féminins en rouge.

Another thing I find quite difficult about learning French is the right pronunciation. 

It's been my frustration that I can not pronounce some sounds in French like "u", "ou", "é", "e", "è", "ê", "eu", ... 

Many people enjoy "ABC Paris", but like me, some foreigners don't know how to pronounce French words. Some words are written exactly the same as English, but they don't pronounce in the same way.

Une autre chose que je trouve difficile dans l'apprentissage du français est la bonne prononciations.

J'ai toujours été frustrée de ne pas pouvoir prononcer certains sons en français, comme "u", "ou", "é", "e", "è", "ê", "eu", ... 

Beaucoup de gens aiment "ABC Paris", mais comme moi, certains étrangers ne savent pas comment prononcer les mots français. Certains mots s'écrivent exactement de la même façon en Anglais mais se prononcent différemment

Michel Garçon is a passionate phonetic teacher in Paris. I have been taken his lessons and that helped me so much in the past. If you are having a problem pronouncing certain French sounds, Michel is an ideal teacher for that.

Michel Garçon est un professeur de phonétique passionné à Paris. J'ai suivi ses cours par le passé et cela m'a beaucoup aidée. Si vous avez des difficultés à prononcer certains sons en français, Michel est le professeur idéal pour ça.

Michel is reading and recording "ABC Paris", so the readers can pronounce French words. We will start from alphabet.

Éléphant Rosé de Touraine

It was my dear friend Hervé's birthday last month. He loves elephants and collects mini elephant sculptures. I made him a little papier mâché elephant. "Éléphant Rosé de Touraine" was inspired by the "Dunamis" sculpture by Bushra Fakhoury, and by the famous rosé wine.

C'était l'anniversaire de mon grand ami Hervé le mois dernier. Il adore les éléphants et en collectionne les petites sculptures. Je lui ai fait un petit éléphant en papier mâché. "Éléphant Rosé de Touraine" a été inspiré par la sculpture "Dunamis" de Bushra Fakhoury et par le fameux vin rosé.

Hervé spent most of his youth in Touraine, because of him, we grew loving the region as well.

Hervé a passé la plupart de sa jeunesse en Touraine, grâce à lui nous avons également grandi en aimant la région.

We are back from our summer vacation in Touraine. We are always thankful to Hervé and friends for sharing happy moments.

Nous sommes de retour de nos vacances en Touraine, merci à Hervé et à nos amis pour partager avec nous des moments de bonheur.

Summer is not over yet, have a great vacation!

"Yuki, Don't you know that you can not plan your life?" Elaine, my ex-boss' wife told me this long time ago. Her words echo in my head time to time and she is right, we cannot always plan. 

"Yuki, ne sais-tu pas que tu ne peux pas planifier ta vie ?" Elaine, la femme de mon ancien patron m'a dit ça il y'a longtemps. Ses mots me reviennent de temps en temps et elle a raison, on ne peut pas toujours planifier.

The month of November, I had planned to visit and spend one month with my father whom I had not seen for a long time. I also planned to catch up with my family and to fill my sketchbook. But my father's illness got worsened quickly so I had to go to Japan earlier. My father passed away the following week. 

Pour novembre j'avais planifié de rendre visite à mon père que je n'avais pas vu depuis longtemps. J'avais également prévu de voir toute ma famille et de remplir mon carnet de croquis. Mais la santé de mon père s'est brusquement dégradée et j'ai dû me rendre au Japon au plus tôt. Mon père est décédé la semaine suivante.

It is hard to loose someone so dear, but I was happy to met my father and talked with him even it was a brief moment. Thank you to my brothers Masato and Hayato who came from Copenhagen and New York to share those moments.

C'est difficile de perdre quelqu'un de si cher, mais j'ai été heureuse de voir mon père et de lui parler même pour ce bref moment. Merci à mes frères Masato et Hayato qui sont venus de Copenhague et New York pour partager ces instants.

My friend Laurie says those who passed before you, they all want you to go on living happily. And that's exactly what my father said to me. He wanted us to be happy and that if we have a dream and work toward it that the happiness would follow.

Mon amie Laurie dit que tous ceux qui partent avant vous veulent que vous ayez une vie heureuse. C'est exactement ce que mon père m'a dit. Il voulait que nous soyons heureux, et si nous avons un rêve, qu'on travaille à le réaliser, le bonheur suivrait.

宿命 (shukumei)
A destiny that is already predetermined. Certain things and events, we can not plan.
Une destinée qui est déjà prédéterminée. Certaines choses et évènements qu'on ne peut planifier.

運命 (unmei)
A destiny that one can guide and monitor. We can work on our attitudes and that would alter our lives.
Une destinée que l'on peut guider et observer. On peut travailler sur notre comportement et cela influencera nos vies. 


I have been affected by this life event.
Thank you to all my family and friends in Japan, France, USA and elsewhere for being there and helping to cope the sad period.
This year, too many people were affected by unfortunate events.

J'ai été affectée par cet évènement de la vie.
Merci à toute ma famille et à tous mes amis au Japon, en France, aux Etats-Unis comme ailleurs pour être là et m'aider à faire face à cette triste période.
Cette année trop de personnes ont été affectées par des évènements tristes.


I will have to have a better dream for next year. 
I may not succeed 100% on planning but I will keep on trying. 
The important thing is to keep on going.

Je vais devoir avoir un meilleur rêve pour l'année à venir. Je ne pourrai peut-être pas réussir à tout planifier mais je vais continuer à essayer.
L'important c'est de continuer à avancer.

I have been working for a long time on the second edition of "ABC Paris" Book, and now it is being printed. I would like to thank my mother and my friends who helped me on improving the book, Olivier who found a printer and everyone who has made pre-ordered and patiently waiting for the book.

We went by the waterfront at Saint-Jean,

a perfect cozy place to hang out during the heatwave.

We had a lovely visit to Château de Chenonceau. 

The Château de Chenonceau was built in early 16th century on the foundations of an old mill by Thomas Bohier, Chamberian to King Charles VIII of France. Diane de Poitiers had extended the château over the River Cher in the mid-16th century. Then Catherine de Medici further embellished this château with adding the gardens.

Nous avons fait une charmante visite au château de Chenonceau.

Le château de Chenonceau a été construit au 16è siècle sur les fondations d'un ancien moulin par Thomas Bohier, secrétaire du Roi de France Charles VIII. Diane de Poitiers a étendu le château au dessus du Cher au milieu du 16è siècle. Plus tard Catherine de Médicis embellit encore le château en y ajoutant les jardins.

After one week of recreation time in Touraine, 

we stopped by at our friends' house before coming back to Paris.

Last week we went to see a play called "3 hommes dans un bateau sans parler du chien" ("Three men in a boat (to say nothing of the dog)"), adaptation of Jerome K. Jerome's novel. Even in French language, English humor was hilarious. The acting of the actors - compeers -, between British composure and nervous break down, we had a lot of laugh.
The stage where they navigate the Thames on a sofa-boat without leaving the living room scene as the picture-dog watched, added a poetry to the absurdity of the situations.

La semaine dernière nous sommes allés voir la pièce de theatre "3 hommes dans un bateau sans parler du chien", adaptation du roman de Jerome K. Jerome. Même en Français, l'humour Anglais reste inimitable. Le jeu des acteurs - complices -, entre flegme britannique et crise de nerfs, nous a beaucoup fait rire.
La mise en scène dans laquelle on vogue sur la Tamise dans un bateau-fauteuils sans quitter le salon, sous le regard d'un chien-tableau, ajoute une poésie à l'absurdité des situations.

My exhibition at Beffroi of the 1st arrondissement last week went very well.
We had a great summer weather everyday. I spent five days looking at the Louvre from the Beffroi and it was just an awesome view. 
Many people came to see the show, I was able to talk and to present my new book "ABC Paris".

Mon exposition au Beffroi du 1er arrondissement la semaine dernière s'est très bien déroulée. Nous avons un eu un beau temps estival chaque jour. J'ai passé cinq jours à admirer le Louvre, c'est une vue magnifique.
De nombreux visiteurs sont venus voir l'exposition, nous avons parlé et j'ai pu présenter mon nouveau livre "ABC Paris"

My warm thank you to Jean and Brigitte Luneau who invited me to participate in their exhibition during the "Festival des Roses" at Chédigny along with Hélène Croshier, Anne Luneau and Gaëlle Seillet. It was my third year participating with artist Jean Luneau and it's always been inspiring to me.
The village of Chédigny has embellished with more and more roses!

Daydreaming of making my ABC Book of Paris for a long time, I was not sure how to put it together. 

Rêvant de réaliser mon abécédaire de Paris depuis longtemps, je ne savais pas vraiment par quel bout commencer.

In 2012 while drawing for my solo show at the Beffroi of 1st arrondissement, exhibition space, the "ABC Book" book again began to take shape in my mind. 

En 2012, en dessinant pour mon exposition au Beffroi du 1er arrondissement, le "ABC Book" a commencé à prendre forme dans mon esprit.

Gradually, putting a short historical text with each ABC Paris image came to me. After struggling with formulating it on my own I contacted Michelle Gross, who has worked with me at ParisMarais.com. Her expertise in researching, fact-checking, rewriting, and editing the text was essential. She made my book historically accurate as well as grammatically and structurally sound. We are both very proud of our collaboration and are already brainstorming on our next project.

Petit à petit l'idée de placer un court texte historique avec chaque image de ABC Paris c'est imposée. Après avoir lutté avec l'écriture, j'ai contacté Michelle Gross qui avait travaillé avec moi à ParisMarais.com. Son expertise en recherche, vérification et réécriture a été essentielle. Elle a rendu mon livre historiquement exact, grammaticalement et structurellement équilibré. Nous sommes toutes les deux très fières de notre collaboration et travaillons déjà à notre prochain projet.

"ABC Book" is the perfect souvenir for a visitor who wants to explore both la Ville Lumière and la langue française.
